Turkey: GAME CHANGER – Designing an Environmental & Energy Education Program for Children

Today, the climate change is a widely recognized serious global challenge, and the evidence suggest that the human activities are the main cause. Energy behaviour of people directly influence the global emissions therefore; understanding of climate change and energy efficiency is at key importance for our future. It is very important to engage people in carbon emission reduction actions and public awareness campaigns constitute an important element to support energy conservation and energy efficiency promotion policies and programs. Children can play a key role in changing society's long-term attitudes to the environment as future energy consumers as well as future policy makers. Children also influence their own families’ lifestyles and behaviour. Therefore, the education of children can play a significant role in delivering pro-environmental and energy efficiency behaviour change. We strongly believe that engaging children in energy actions and giving them an active role in energy conservation is very important for combating global climate change.

In the “Game Changer” project, we propose developing an innovative Environmental & Energy Education Program through physical activities and games for elementary school children (the age group of 8-12). The children who attend the games will get acquainted with the phenomenon, causes and consequences of climate change, energy consumption and environmental pollution. They will also learn practical and simple actions to save energy in daily life and what they can do to prevent climate change while playing games with their peers.

Tourist about 100 people from Greece have came to the village of Karamık, Taşova District of Amasya province in every year.  They stay here for about 20 days. In addition, there are about 50 stroller beekeepers each year in our region. We want to get 15 tourist tents in size to accommodate these tourists and stroller beekeepers. We want to provide these tourists with better service by renting these tents to tourists and stroller beekeepers and to the people of the region and to our association
From this practice; at least 100 tourists from Greece, at least 50 stroller beekeepers and 100 local tourists and 100 people from the region are expected to be affected. A total of 350 people will be impacted.

Particularly in early childhood education, children's meeting with a rich environment is crucial to the development, awareness and perceptions of the child. Children are open to learning during this period. Prejudiced, empathic, loving, socially and emotionally rapidly developing children in this class immediately accepts different children in the class. They participate in all events together. This contributes to the development of both children with special needs and healthy children. The prominence of individual differences in education is indisputable. Every child is unique, different. The important thing is that the children have to face the rich environment and they live different applications. The Association for Supporting Children with Special Needs Education was established in order to increase the accessibility of special education services by identifying the children who need special education, teaching all kinds of educational-arts-sports activities, educational courses-courses-seminars-panels organized and meeting the professional needs of the teachers. We aim to provide equal opportunity for children with special needs who are feeling a lot of deficiency in our country. Within our project called, We are all different, we are all in museums, we are carrying out educational studies in which we create an environment where children can learn by living together by bringing together the children of the various preschool education institutions with our special needs children. In this study we aim to change the lives of more children by publishing our educational activities which proves that the museums are rich stimulating environments that contribute to the development of children in rich, cultural, historical, social and artistic ways. Our goal is to integrate education into a system that embraces each child in a child-centred education model, ensuring that all children are educated and integrated together in an environment of love and sharing. With the book we will prepare, we intend to disseminate this educational model.

The International Art Educator Association is working to organize activities in the field of education and art at local, national and international level and to produce common projects on this area; contributing to the development of studies; to exchange information with persons and organizations working in these subjects and to bring these people together on a common ground. Entrepreneurs who understand and appreciate the value of design come to the forefront in our changing and  continuosly-developing world. For this reason, it is necessary for young people to be entrepreneurs for business life to complete their corporate identity designs before they establish their businesses and to create design models for products and services. We will provide organic soap production training for refugee and disadvantaged youth who are unemployed, and they will be provided to enter the market. Training sessions on design training and marketing strategies for organic soap production models will be given during this period. After, these training program our participants will be able to use information that they gained during the training in their business life. They will be able to apply this info in other sectors. If they want, they will be able to go on to product soap and new designs. Also, they will be able to share their knowledge with people around them. Our aims are; to enable refugee and disadvantaged young people to enter into business life consciously and as researchers, to provide design and innovation training for the refugee and disadvantaged youth, to understand the importance of design in product and service sales, teaching design principles to refugee and disadvantaged youth, to teach how design can contribute to reduce entrepreneurship risk, to encourage refugee and disadvantaged youth to be entrepreneurial and creative, informing the refugees and disadvantaged youth about the relationship between design and marketing in entrepreneurship.

The main purpose of our association is to provide health, employment, accessibility, avoiding discrimination for hearing impaired in order to solve their problems through rights-based activities and projects. Since some of our graduates are high school graduates, they cannot be employed in the public education centre according to the regulations. Anywhere in Turkey there are many demands to come to our association sign language course. Volunteers include doctors, nurses, social workers, lawyers, police officers, etc. But these people cannot reach our courses because of various reasons such as distance, cost, and timelessness. As many of our voluntary citizens are in the position to be close to hearing and speech impaired by receiving TID training and to communicate with them, we aim to open this door with remote Turkish sign language education and continue this live interaction in the social life that we will start on the internet via "webinar". In addition, we aim to employ our unemployed TID instructors who are unemployed on this vocational level, our hearing and speech impaired, in their homes as a "home office" system and then integrate with the society. After these live courses started on the internet, the instructors and trainees will chat in our association. By this they will be able to practice in real life. The name of our project was thus inspired by the term "home office" freelance, is "Home TID Office".

The outcome of this project is the audio releases of 13 high school textbooks (history, geography, biology, group of economic subjects, constitution and law, languages, philosophy, psychology and sociology) and applications for android phones through which the books could be listened to. These textbooks are selected because they meet three criteria: they are part of compulsory formal education, they have a lot of text and the fact that there are printed editions on the market. We will make audio textbooks by textbooks being read by trained narrators and preserving audio in digital format. Such a file will be edited and uploaded on the internet, and users will be able to listen to audiobooks as music and any other audio content via Android phone app.

The basic idea combines the contribution to solving major environmental problems (air purification, increasing biodiversity, combating climate change) and the development of a sustainable income model for organization GM Optimist, through the formation of seedlings of Oak and Beech trees that will be used for afforestation.

Increasing the forests level is one of the basic ways to eliminate greenhouse gases from the atmosphere (especially carbon dioxide), while trees have a positive impact on the increase in biodiversity (provides habitat and food for different kinds of plants and animals). Due to all of the above, we want to set up a mini tree nursery seedling by gathering seeds from nature and then cultivating them until they reach a sufficient age for planting.

In this, we see the potential for income activity in two ways. One is organizing corporate volunteer actions, where employees in companies will participate in afforestation actions and pay a certain amount for participation. The other is packing seedlings into designed mini cartons for sale (mainly for the business sector), so that their employees can plant them, individually or together.

One of the problems with far-reaching consequences in recent times is illegal landfills and an increasing presence of old, worn-out tires on them. Worn-out car tires represent waste for whose degradation in nature takes 150 years.

In most cases, illegal landfills are located in rural areas, primarily due to the lack of funds to expand the waste collection system but also the poor waste management organization at the local level.

About 1.4 million pieces of new tires are put on the market in Serbia annually, on the basis of which it is estimated that about 18,000 tons of waste tires are produced.

Recycling today is a condition sine qua non, something that should become a modern lifestyle, and our vision is that by realizing this idea, many people will accept this view.

Craft skills that can be applied in the "creative industry" surely and slowly sink into oblivion. It is believed that manual work is a detail of textile and knitwear production, however, in its essence, manual work as an idea, is a driver in every sense.

It is known that knitting and crocheting occupy a large number of people around the world. The knitting technique is specific because the work process is based on counting loops while working, which increases attention and concentration of the person that does it.

By realizing this business idea we have a vision to make a new product from the mainly recycled thread and other suitable materials.

We are witnessing how many plastic bottles, bags and other plastic waste we look every day in our surroundings. All this plastic, instead of having a 'purpose’ to pollute the environment, can be turned into something nice and useful. Machines of precious plastic have not been seen so far in Montenegro - we are not talking about expensive plastics recycling plants and machines, but of much more affordable devices, through which we will decompose the collected plastics to its basic components and then use them for the production of new items.

This project is planned to be implemented in Podgorica and include educational institutions in its implementation. The way we will achieve this is through practical workshops where we will, among other things, make bins for separate waste disposal. In these bins, pupils will dispose of plastic waste on a continuous basis, and the plastic that is collected will be used for recycling machines of precious plastic with pupils. The social business will be able to maintain a precious-plastic workshop and the people most engaged in it, and the rest of the money will be invested back into the environment by donations for certain ecological purposes, by investing in the organization of workshops, by investing in the establishment of precious plastics units throughout Montenegro.

It is important to note that the idea derives from the Precious Plastic project, the Dutchman Dave Hakens' initiative, to which we are very grateful! He shares his idea, a guide to making recycling machines and other necessary materials under the Creative Commons license for free, through his website, and we intend to implement the same in Montenegro.

In this project, young people are the main target group and the most important component in the project implementation, both young volunteers from NGO Green mind who work on organizing and planning the activities and young people from educational institutions participating in these programs, who will attend our workshops, as well as wider general public that will follow the activities through social networks and even young people who may themselves begin recycling at home.

Montenegro: SELJAK.ME

Crnogorski jezik is first Montenegrin digital village where all farmers can advertise their products. Within just few clicks every farmer can advertise their surpluses such as cattle, machinery, seedlings, manure, hay, etc. which are trying to sell and they can advertise it for free.  Also there is part of the website where we write articles about agriculture. On that part of website we are trying that through information improve production and give more access to information which can be used on daily basis production.

There was interest for domestic and traditional food products from customers so we created a part of website just for final products (food) called Agronet. Agronet is network that connects directly food producers and consumers and in best way present food offer from every part of county within just few steps. Also on Agronet there is a part of site reserved from counselling services, agriculture pharmacies, veterinaries, etc. and as well there is a Forum where farmers can communicate among themselves and through constructive dialogues help each other.

Farmers are main part of society because they produce what is most important to each of us to function on daily basis and that is food.  Better quality food means that we all improve our own quality of life so we need to help food producers to improve their production and to connect among themselves to help with better flow of information which is most important tool in agriculture.

The aim of the project is to preserve a part of the watercourse of the river Ćehotina and to point out its ecological problems, because it is near the town of Pljevlja, the coal mine and Thermal Power Plant therefore it is a highly polluted river. We want to preserve currently the cleanest part of the Ćehotina River with this project. The part is upstream from the town, some 2 km away, in the area between 2 dams, in place Rabitlje.

This part is surrounded by two dams, built for the needs of the Thermal Power Plant and the expansion of coal, so there is no natural flow of fish species in this part and it has to be harvested, and the quality of water and flow velocity is the only corresponding on the entire course of the Ćehotina River.

So, we want to develop the fishing tourism in this part and undertake the following activities: cleaning of the mentioned river from the garbage, recording promotional spots on fishing on Ćehotina River, making Eco leaflet which we will distribute to young people in order to raise ecological awareness, arranging the future park in Rabitlje (setting up benches, baskets for waste, tables, boards), holding a round table on the theme of protection of the Ćehotina River, as well as supplying autochthonous brown trout.

We plan to proclaim the mentioned part of the river Ćehotina the fishing spot, where special daily fishing licenses 'catch and release the fish' should be applied. In this way, by developing fishing tourism in Pljevlja, we want to contribute to fishing line, beautiful natural environment, the clean river and rich fish fund.

Montenegro: ZNUGGLE

The facts:

1.Northern Montenegro offers limited economical activities on-site however lots of women have traditional skills such as crochet.

2. There is an increasing demand in Western countries for handmade and natural products with a story.

3. Sheep wool in Montenegro is often being thrown away as it requires lots of effort to process.

Our solution:

- Creating a Social Enterprise (Znuggle) to give women living in katuns in the mountains area around Berane additional economical activities: Znuggle follows the Fair-Trade principles, paying women a fair wage. Women working for Znuggle will do spinning and crocheting of woolen products, in their own time, at home or while watching their sheep flock.

- We reuse left over fruits and vegetables to create natural dyes for the wool harvested and spun in Montenegro. Our products are 100% made of waste. We create value from what has been discarded: demonstrating that Circle Economy is possible.

- Products are representing elements of Montenegro ecosystems (animals, plants, insects) and will become the characters of stories that will teach children the importance of protecting their environment. The models are modern and created by international designers.

- We will promote the products abroad through our networks of retailers and media and we expect it to give work to many women in vulnerable areas of Montenegro for many years.

We have been working on prototypes for the last year and are now ready to launch the production! With this Social Innovation grant, we will be able to immediately give women work to produce the first batch of Znuggle products.

Znuggle is a project supported by Zero Waste Montenegro which is an NGO whose mission is to promote the reduction of our production of waste while creating job opportunities in Montenegro.

Financial illiteracy is one of the critical problems among young generations in Montenegro. The lack of understanding how money works, how markets contribute to the society, how regulations affect business, how the government spends money is the problem which appears to be widespread in our society. That is why School of Financial Literacy is there to help young people to understand how economic and financial systems work. Through lectures, practice and interactive material the high school students will have the opportunity to find out more about basic principles of economic and finance but also to explore some complex issues which will help them to understand economic activities in our society better and to be ahead of them all. School of Financial Literacy will be organized in several forms which will be available for all high school students from North to South. Not only that young students will have the opportunity to hear lectures from famous and distinguished economists, business people, bankers, financial analysts, and professors but also, they will be able to have access over the internet in case they don’t have the opportunity to be with us on site. School of Financial Literacy is the project that could reshape the way of thinking and our views on economic activities and issues in our country.

Macedonia: "Click-to-Donate" web platform

Click-to-donate is a fundraising website where visitors to the website donate for a certain cause by clicking on advertisements (banners) (it can also be an organization or project). The financial resources are generated by advertisers (products /services that are advertised) that pay based on visits / clicks and thus improve their image as companies that are socially responsible. The ratio of funds that will be generated will be regulated according to the needs of the project and/or the organization that implements it. For example: 80% of the monthly income will be for the cause for which it is donated, and 20% will be for the team/organization that runs the project - the web platform (note: the stated ratio in percentage is only provided to serve as example. In a real situation, it will be additionally determined. For illustration purposes, it looks like this - the visitor to the website chooses the cause / organization / project he wants to donate, chooses an advertising banner from a product / service / company, scrolls advertisements with 5 clicks, and after the end of the last slide of the advertising content, the website informs the visitor that for the selected cause he donated 1 denar. The advertisers will be provided with access to their banners at any time. We believe that we will get the confidence that will strengthen the cooperation and will provide new advertisers.

Macedonia: Learning can be fun

Students from a very early age like working space, books, applications and materials that inspire them and make learning creative and fun. Technology, through educational applications, can help a lot to set the educational objectives and acquire skills. Diversity in the applications, which need to be developed in the languages of the teaching process, is helpful for all students, regardless of their competences and preferences. In order to implement this idea, a core group of teachers will be created who are willing to invest their time and knowledge. Through workshops, they will be trained on the process of developing educational applications including conception, design, programming (coding), linking to the objectives of the curriculum and drafting a manual for use and publication of the apps. The principle of universal design will be applied. The benefits will be used by the students, but also the teachers who will be using the apps and will be also able to adjust them on the basis of the interest and ability of their own students. Аn added value will be the sharing of knowledge among the teachers.

Macedonia: Stay a child – keep your creativity and entrepreneurial spirit

The key problem that the current formal education system is facing is the fact that it continuously suffocates the inner children’s creativity that children at pre-school age have by definition. The idea is to create an interesting animated character at a pre-school age (2-4 years) who will be the main character in short animated videos. The videos will present different everyday life events that (s)he spends together with the other members of his family (mother and father who are not satisfied with their jobs, but are afraid to take risk and leave their “comfort zone” because they are afraid of failure, and an older sibling who is a high-school/university student with serious symptoms of “locked creativity” because of the influence of the educational system and the stereotypes imposed by their parents).

Each episode will confront the inner creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the child against the efforts to “suffocate” these characteristics of the parents. The older sibling will be “stuck in the environment” and, following the initial accusations on the account of the younger sibling’s “creative kid’s nonsense”, will stand on his/her side and they will jointly contribute to a change of their parents’ behavior. Actually, each episode ends with a jointly accepted message aimed to promote creative, innovative and entrepreneurial values such as thinking „out of the box“, learning through games, fun and breaking the established rules, no fear of mistakes, failure and being mocked by the surrounding, imagining things through pictures etc..

Macedonia: Social Enterprise For Laundry Services

The Roma Democratic Development Association “Sonce” will establish a social enterprise business which is going to be laundry services (washing and ironing service provider for sheets and bedding) from the restaurants and hotels in Tetovo. This social entrepreneurship will contribute to increasing the employment of Roma women in Tetovo and the improvement of livelihoods and living conditions of their families. On the other hand, the company will contribute to meet the needs of the market and provide services to restaurants and hotels. The company would do the collection of sheets and bedding directly; the washing, drying and ironing of the sheets and bedding; and the re-distribution of the sheets and bedding to the restaurants and hotels.

The company would start operating in the municipality of Tetovo first, and then be extended to the Municipality of Gostivar. The company will employ 10 Roma women and 2 Roma men from Tetovo. The 10 Roma women will be responsible for washing and ironing the sheets and bedding and the 2 Roma men will be responsible for transferring the sheets and bedding from the restaurants and hotels to the enterprise and vice versa. Sonce has found out that there is need for a business which will satisfy the needs of the restaurants and hotels. There is no other company within Tetovo which offers laundry services to restaurants and hotels.

Macedonia: Green key to a safer childhood

Every year, the inhabitants in the rural villages in Negotino face the appearance of acute contagious diseases, transmitted by swarms of harmful insects – flies. The reason for this enormous population of flies lies within the inadequate management of household waste, as well as the waste from the small improvised farms that almost every family in the villages has.  The objective of this green undertaking is to open the first farm for parasitoid wasps Nasonia, which will engage in breeding, reproduction and sale. The green product will enable protection through ecologic destruction of the flies using parasitoid wasps around the farms and the homes of the farmers’ families, in an efficient, biological manner, without use of insecticides. The small parasitoid wasp is 1.5mm big, usually active at night and with the ability to dig into the garbage at a depth of 20cm, where it finds the pupae of the flies, lays its eggs within them and destroys them. It is harmless for humans, animals and bees, does not attack and does not hive. The wasps will be packed in special boxes, protected from external influence and will be distributed and sold to farmers and other customers. The users of this product include the population in the rural areas, citizens in urban areas, farms, organic farms, public landfills and disinsection services.

Due to the fact that our country is faced with a lot of examples of marginalization of certain groups as people with disabilities, children without parents from public institutions as „Dom-porodica“, etc. the goal of this project is to animate those target groups into social and health benefits of Zumba fitness activities.

This is why CSO Zumba with Dila and Nina has recognized the need to engage its resources in creation and improvement of the inclusivity culture through Zumba fitness trainings. Zumba fitness is one of the most innovative and currently most attractive methods of workout and dancing in the world and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It means a training which is a connection of physical activities with dancing exercises in the same time. In that way Zumba fitness is an ideal choice if you want to improve body condition, tighten muscles and have fun in the same time. The goal of this project is that by this way of practicing animate marginalized groups and incorporate inclusive principles into work of our CSO. Furthermore, CSO wants to initiate changes in fitness program agendas and also in social education of children and adults through inclusion, identification and prevention of exclusion of children and adults from extracurricular health processes.
